Step by step

The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Your partner attacks with a forward technique. Step in behind their motion and clamp your arms around their trunk, your chest to their side or back, your knees bent low.
  2. Drive your hips forward and under them, your body coiling like a spring beneath their attack.
  3. Leap back and bridge: your body arches backwards, lifting them off the mat as your chest drives up.
  4. Turn your head to one side and throw them over your shoulder as you fall, your arms steering their flight.
  5. They land on their back beyond your shoulder while you land on your upper back beside them; release the trunk as they land so the two falls stay separate.

Receiving it

You attack, and their body coils under you; then everything goes up and over backwards as they bridge and throw you over their shoulder. This is one of judo's biggest falls: you travel high, upside down, and land behind them. Tuck your chin to your chest and stay tucked, arms ready, and take the landing across your upper back, never your neck or head. Receive this one only from partners who know it, and build the height up gradually.
