    Rights and removal

    The words on this site were written for it. Many of the pictures were not. This page says which is which, and gives anyone who owns something here a direct route to have it taken down.

    If you own something here

    Ask us to remove it and we will. You do not need to prove ownership, send a formal notice, or explain why. Naming the file or the page is enough.

    • We aim to acknowledge within 3 working days and remove within 7.
    • Removal is the default. We will not ask you to justify it.
    • If you would rather have credit or a licence than removal, say so and we will do that instead.

    Make a removal request

    That opens a short form on the project's GitHub repository. If you would rather not use GitHub, or the matter is sensitive, the repository profile has a direct contact for the project owner.

    What is openly licensed, and what is not

    The technique narrations, receiving notes, translations, syllabus transcriptions and all the underlying data are the project's own work and are published under CC BY-SA 4.0: reuse them freely, with credit.

    The illustrations are not covered by that licence.The project cannot license what it does not own, so it does not try to. If you are reusing this reference, take the data and supply your own images.

    Where the images came from

    Every image on this site records its rights position, and these counts come straight from that data:

    65 images: origin not established
    These come from a club reference document compiled over many years from many sources. The original sources were not recorded and cannot now be identified. They are published in good faith as a non-commercial teaching aid, marked honestly rather than passed off as ours, and removed on request.
    33 images: known to belong to someone else
    Chiefly the Mon and Kyu syllabus sheets, which are federation publications reproduced so judoka can study their own syllabus, with the source named on the page. Permission has not been sought, and any of these rights holders can have their material removed by asking.

    Replacing the uncertain images with purpose-made illustrations is an open goal. If you draw, that is the most useful contribution the project could receive.

    Videos are linked, not copied

    Demonstration videos are embedded or linked from the platform they were published on. Nothing is rehosted or downloaded: playback happens on the platform's own player, under its terms, with the view counting to whoever published it. If you would prefer your video not be linked from here at all, the same removal route applies and we will unlink it.

    Names and organisations

    Japanese technique names and their classification are facts and are claimed by nobody. Grading syllabuses are transcribed as published, with the source document named, because the list of what a grading requires is factual; the prose describing how to perform each technique is written for this project.

    Waza Book is independent of the British Judo Association, JudoScotland, the Kodokan and the International Judo Federation, and is endorsed by none of them. Their names are used only to identify whose syllabus or material is being described.
