Koshi-guruma countered by Ura-nage
A hip wheel entered high and loose leaves your partner's waist available and their weight above yours. Ura-nage drops beneath it and throws them backwards over your own shoulder.

Step by step
The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.
- Feel their arm come around your neck and their hip turn in for Koshi-guruma.
- Drop your hips immediately below theirs and widen your stance so you are the lower of the two.
- Wrap both arms around their waist, hands meeting low on the far side, and pull their body tight to your chest.
- Brace your back straight and lift them off the mat with your legs, not your spine.
- Arch backwards and turn your shoulders so they travel over your near shoulder rather than onto your head.
- Turn as you land so they arrive on their side and you land beside them, not underneath. Build this one up gradually with a partner who knows it is coming.
