Step by step

The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. From a right-handed grip, reach your right arm over their left arm, or under it for the larger form, and take hold of the back of their belt.
  2. Lift with the belt grip so their hips come towards you, and step your right foot inside their right foot.
  3. Pivot and bring your left foot around, turning your back into them, knees bent, hips below theirs, the belt hand still hoisting.
  4. Pull the sleeve around your body and load them onto your hips.
  5. Straighten your legs, bow forward, and rotate them over your right hip with the belt grip steering.
  6. They land on their back in front of you; keep the sleeve as the belt hand releases.

Receiving it

A hand takes the back of your belt and you feel yourself hoisted as their hips come in: the belt lift makes this entry hard to stop and easy to feel. You are carried over the hip in a forward rotation. Ride it, chin tucked, and land on your back with your left arm slapping.

About this technique

A hip throw in which tori grips uke's belt and lifts with it while the hips come through.

Key points

  1. Grip the back of the belt, over or under uke's arm
  2. Lift with the belt hand as the hips enter
  3. Rotate uke over the hip line, keeping the pull continuous
