About this technique
The strangle with both hands working as a pair: both fists grip the collars and drive together, knuckles turning in, like wringing a towel. Strangles are restricted by age in most federations; learn and practise this only under instruction and supervision.

Step by step
These steps describe the standard right-handed form without relying on the video.
Left-handed: these steps use the standard right-handed form. Swap every left and right.
- Facing your partner on the ground, grip both of their collars near the front of the neck, one in each fist, thumbs wrapped in the cloth.
- Bring your fists close together so the collars are gathered at the front of their neck.
- Turn both wrists so the little-finger edges of your fists rotate towards their neck, the cloth tightening around it.
- Draw the fists towards each other and slightly towards you, on a smooth curve, like wringing.
- Release both hands fully at the tap, and check your partner.

Receiving it
Both fists gather your collars at the front and the cloth wrings tight from both sides at once. Grip their wrists and tuck your chin before the wring settles. Tap immediately and clearly the moment the strangle is properly on, on their arm or body where they will feel it; holding on risks a blackout. Tell your instructor if you ever feel light-headed afterwards.
VI judo notes
Both hands do the same thing, which makes the check simple by feel: two fists gathered together at the front of the neck. Take the collars near the front where the cloth is easiest to find, then turn the wrists and wring. Nothing in it needs sight, and all of it needs to be gradual.
In competition
, how often it scores at IJF level, and two contests where it worked
No score recorded in senior IJF competition between 2020 and 2026, across 73,099 contests. That is a fact about modern contest judo rather than a gap in the data: the technique is taught, examined and classified, and it does not score at this level.
