About this technique
The strangle that needs no cloth: applied from behind with the forearm across the front of the neck, hence naked. One of the fundamental shime-waza. Strangles are restricted by age in most federations; learn and practise this only under instruction and supervision.

A technique to choke the opponent’s neck region without using judogi by putting the right forearm on the opponent’s throat from behind and joining the left arm on it.
Key points
- Applied from behind; your forearm, not your hand, crosses the neck
- The pressure is a squeeze that builds, never a pull or a jerk
- Release completely and immediately at the tap, and watch your partner after

Step by step
These steps describe the standard right-handed form without relying on the video.
Left-handed: these steps use the standard right-handed form. Swap every left and right.
- You are behind your partner, chest against their back, both of you on the mat or with them seated in front of you.
- Slide your right arm around the front of their neck so your inner forearm lies across their throat, palm down, your right hand reaching past their left shoulder.
- Bring your left hand over their left shoulder and clasp your two hands together above it, without gripping their judogi.
- Keep your chest glued to their back and your head close beside theirs so they cannot turn inside the arm.
- Apply gradually with both arms together, your right forearm pressing across the front of their throat. The pressure builds smoothly; there is never a snatch.
- Release fully the moment they tap, open both arms, and stay with them for a moment. Practise only under instruction and within your federation's age rules.

Receiving it
An arm comes around your neck from behind and their chest fixes to your back; the pressure is a closing squeeze rather than a blow. Tuck your chin early to fight for space, but tap immediately and clearly the moment the strangle is properly on, on their arm where they will feel it; holding on risks a blackout. Tell your instructor if you ever felt light-headed after one.
VI judo notes
There is no cloth to find, so the whole technique runs on contact. Seal your chest to their back as you take the position and keep it there; that contact, not your hands, is what tells you whether they are turning inside your arm. Their tap may come on your arm, your leg or the mat, so stay ready for it anywhere and let go at the first one.
