Step by step
The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.
Left-handed: these steps are written right-handed, as the syllabuses write them. Read every left as a right and every right as a left, and the throw is yours.
- Facing your partner on the ground, grip deep in their left collar with your left hand, thumb inside, anchoring their head.
- With your right hand, take their right collar low, near the chest, gathering the cloth in your fist.
- Fix their posture with the anchor grip so they cannot pull away.
- Thrust your right fist across their throat, driving the gathered collar cloth like a bar, while the anchor hand pulls the other way.
- Apply on a smooth curve, and release both hands completely the moment they tap.
Receiving it
One grip anchors your collar and a fist drives the other side of the cloth straight across your throat: this one arrives faster than the crossed strangles. Defend the anchoring grip early and keep your chin tucked. Tap immediately and clearly the moment the strangle is properly on, on their arm or body where they will feel it; never hold out to prove toughness. Tell your instructor if you ever feel light-headed afterwards.
About this technique
A strangle by thrust: one hand grips deep in the far collar and the other drives the near collar across the throat like a bar. Direct and fast. Strangles are restricted by age in most federations; learn and practise this only under instruction and supervision.
Key points
- One deep anchor grip, one thrusting fist across
- The thrust drives the cloth, never the knuckles, into the neck
- Control their posture first; the thrust needs a fixed target
