Step by step
The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.
Left-handed: these steps are written right-handed, as the syllabuses write them. Read every left as a right and every right as a left, and the throw is yours.
- Grip both of their sleeves, your right hand on their left sleeve at the wrist or forearm, your left on their right sleeve at the elbow.
- Swing their left sleeve arm high, up and across your body, as if raising a flag past your left ear, drawing them onto their toes.
- Pivot in beneath the raised arm, knees deeply bent, hips through and below theirs.
- Load them across your hips with the raised sleeve still driving over, your left hand pulling their right sleeve around you.
- Straighten your legs and bow forward; they roll over your hips and land on their back in front of you. Keep the right-sleeve grip for their landing.
Receiving it
Both of your sleeves are taken and one arm is suddenly swung high across; with it goes your posture, and their hips arrive underneath. You are thrown over the hip with one arm up and one held, so tuck your chin, turn with it, and land on your back; the fall is a standard hip-throw landing but the raised arm makes it feel less controllable, so commit to the rotation early.
About this technique
The lifting pulling hip throw driven from a double-sleeve grip: uke's sleeve-side arm is swung high across as the hips enter, so the throw works even against a stiff defensive arm. A modern competition favourite.
