Step by step
The whole movement in words, so no part of it depends on watching a video. Described in the standard right-handed form.
Left-handed: these steps are written right-handed, as the syllabuses write them. Read every left as a right and every right as a left, and the throw is yours.
- Your partner is bent forward, their head down and their weight over their front foot.
- Reach your right arm over their back and take the far side of their belt, or wrap it under their left arm.
- Sit straight down, close to your own heels, and pull them onto you as you go.
- Roll backwards along your spine, not onto your head, keeping the grip tight to your chest.
- Their weight carries over the top of you and they land on their back; keep rolling with them and follow into a hold.
Receiving it
You are pulled downwards and forwards as your partner disappears beneath you, and the mat arrives over the top rather than in front. Keep your chin tucked and your arms in front of you so you do not post a straight arm into the mat. The landing is on your back or shoulders, and the roll continues, so stay relaxed and be ready to keep moving in ne-waza.
About this technique
A rear sacrifice against a partner who is bent forward: tori takes the belt or wraps the far arm, sits straight down and rolls backwards, pulling uke over the top and out onto their back. A Kodokan sacrifice technique that flows naturally into groundwork.
Key points
- Take a deep grip first: belt, or under the far arm
- Sit down close to your own heels, not away from them
- Roll along your back and keep pulling all the way over
