Kumi-kata · grip-set

Two on one behind the elbow

The hands

Pulling hand
The sleeve above the elbow.
Lifting hand
The sleeve above the elbow. Behind the same arm, gripping the sleeve above the elbow from the back.
Stance
Either stance: the set is taken the same way against both.

Both hands on one arm, the second hand reaching behind it to hold the sleeve above the elbow from the back, so the arm is folded against your chest. It turns your partner's shoulder past you and puts their weight on one leg, and the throws follow from that: the corner reversal, the minor inner reap and the shoulder wheel without touching the legs.

Under contest rules

Allowed while attacking. A one-side grip is allowed with a positive attitude and time to prepare an attack. Held to block, it draws a shido.

Key points

  • Second hand behind the arm, gripping above the elbow from the back
  • Fold the arm to your chest and turn their shoulder past you
  • Stay off the centre line of their free hand

Taking it

  1. Take your partner's sleeve at the elbow with your pulling hand.
  2. Reach your other hand behind the same arm and grip the sleeve above the elbow from behind.
  3. Fold the arm against your chest and step to the outside, turning their shoulder past you.
  4. Attack while their weight is on the near leg.

Being held this way

Both of their hands on one of your arms from in front and behind means your shoulder is being turned past them and your free hand cannot reach. Pull the held elbow back to your hip and turn to face them before they attack.

VI judo notes

One arm folded and pulled across your chest while the other finds nothing is this grip. Turn back towards the held arm, and get the free hand to their collar by feel.
