Grips
Kumi-kata is the fight before the throw, and it is decided by which set of grips each judoka ends up holding. These are the sets: where each hand goes, which stance game each belongs to, and the throws that follow from it. How a set is reached and how one is broken are skills of their own.
Either stance
The set is taken the same way against both.
- Sleeve and lapelThe grip almost every technique in this reference is written from: pulling hand at the sleeve just below the elbow, lifting hand on the lapel at collarbone height.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the lapel at chest height. Feeds 5 throws.
- Double lapelBoth hands on the lapels at chest height.Hands on the lapel at chest height and the lapel at chest height. Feeds 4 throws.

- Pistol gripThe sleeve is taken at the cuff with the thumb pointing down inside it and the fingers wrapped round the outside.Hands on the sleeve end and the lapel at chest height. Feeds 2 throws.
- Sleeve and back beltThe lifting hand reaches round to the belt at the back.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the back of the belt. Feeds 3 throws.
- Sleeve and front beltThe lifting hand takes the belt at the front instead of the lapel.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the front of the belt. Feeds 2 throws.
- Sleeve and under the armThe lifting arm goes under your partner's arm to the back of the jacket rather than over it.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and under the arm to the back. Feeds 4 throws.
- Sleeve onlyOne hand on the sleeve, the other deliberately free.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow. Feeds 4 throws.
- Two on oneBoth of your hands on one of your partner's arms, one at the elbow and one at the cuff.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the sleeve end. Feeds 4 throws.
- Two on one behind the elbowBoth hands on one arm, the second hand reaching behind it to hold the sleeve above the elbow from the back, so the arm is folded against your chest.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the sleeve above the elbow. Feeds 3 throws.
Same stance相四つ
Right against right, or left against left.
- High collarThe lifting hand reaches over the shoulder and takes the collar behind the neck.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the collar behind the neck. Feeds 4 throws.
- Sleeve and over the backThe lifting arm goes over the shoulder and takes the back of the jacket.Hands on the sleeve above the elbow and the back of the jacket, over the shoulder. Feeds 4 throws.
