Step by step

These steps describe the whole sequence in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Take your right grips and reap the inside of their left leg backwards with your right leg.
  2. Feel them pull the leg clear, their weight coming forward over their toes.
  3. Put your right foot down and pull their right sleeve down and across with your left hand to keep that weight travelling.
  4. Spin in on the ball of your left foot, driving your right arm under their right armpit and your hips below theirs.
  5. Straighten your legs and turn your shoulders to the left to load them across your back.
  6. They come over your shoulder and land on their back; keep the sleeve to support the fall.

Receiving it

Pulling the reaped leg back saves the leg and moves your weight forward over your toes, which is the one place the shoulder throw wants you. Expect the spin immediately, before your foot is properly down. Once their arm is under yours and their hips are below you, going with it is safer than resisting: chin tucked, stay long, and slap with your free left arm as your back lands.

VI judo notes

Their leg pulling clear is felt through your own reaping leg, and their weight arriving forward is felt in your sleeve hand: two cues, both from contact. Put the reaping foot down and spin from where it lands, without stepping away to reset. Keep the sleeve pulling down and across so their chest comes onto your back rather than having to be found.
