Step by step

These steps describe the whole sequence in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Take your right grips and reap their right foot inwards with the sole of your right foot.
  2. Feel them snatch the foot back and step away, which brings their chest forward over their front leg.
  3. Pull down and across with your left hand on their sleeve to keep that weight coming.
  4. Spin in on the ball of your left foot, driving your right arm under their right armpit and your hips below theirs.
  5. Straighten your legs and turn your shoulders to the left to load them across your back.
  6. They come over your shoulder and land on their back; keep the sleeve to support the fall.

Receiving it

The reap goes at your right foot from the inside, and stepping away from it brings your chest forward over your front leg, which is precisely what the shoulder throw wants. Expect their spin to be immediate and their hips to arrive below yours. Once you are loaded on their back, do not fight it with a straight arm. Chin tucked, slap with your free left arm as your back lands, and let the held sleeve keep the fall controlled.

VI judo notes

Their step away is felt as weight coming forward into your sleeve hand, and that pull is the cue to spin. Do not release anything between the two attacks: the sleeve is what draws them onto your back and what tells you they are there. Spin on the ball of your foot and let your hips find theirs by contact rather than stepping in and hoping.
