O-soto-otoshi into Kesa-gatame
The first transition on the BJA Mon syllabus, and the model for all of them: the throw is not finished until you have the hold. Osoto-otoshi drops them straight back beside you, ready for the scarf hold.

Step by step
The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.
- Take your right grips and drop them straight back over your extended right leg with Osoto-otoshi.
- Keep their right sleeve throughout the fall so their head stays supported.
- Step around to their right side and drop your hips to the mat beside their ribs.
- Pass your right arm around the back of their neck and pull their right arm tight under your left armpit.
- Spread your legs wide, one forward and one back, and settle your chest across theirs.
- Hold with your body weight, keep your head up and release the moment they tap.
