O-soto-otoshi into Kesa-gatame. Transition (Tachi-waza into ne-waza). Techniques ---------- 1. O-soto-otoshi (大外落), the major outer drop. 2. Kesa-gatame (袈裟固), the scarf hold. About ----- The first transition on the BJA Mon syllabus, and the model for all of them: the throw is not finished until you have the hold. Osoto-otoshi drops them straight back beside you, ready for the scarf hold. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Take your right grips and drop them straight back over your extended right leg with Osoto-otoshi. 2. Keep their right sleeve throughout the fall so their head stays supported. 3. Step around to their right side and drop your hips to the mat beside their ribs. 4. Pass your right arm around the back of their neck and pull their right arm tight under your left armpit. 5. Spread your legs wide, one forward and one back, and settle your chest across theirs. 6. Hold with your body weight, keep your head up and release the moment they tap. Receiving it ------------ You drop straight backwards over their extended leg with your right sleeve still held, which is what keeps your head off the mat: chin on your chest, slap with your free left arm as your back lands. Then the hold arrives immediately at your right side. Turn towards them and get your trapped arm moving before their chest settles, because once their weight is through your ribs and their legs are spread wide, patience serves you better than panic. Drop your hips to the mat beside their ribs rather than kneeling and feeling around. Take the neck and the trapped arm by sliding along their body, so both hands arrive where you expect them.
