Minimum age and time in grade
- Minimal Age: 33
- Minimal Time in Grade: Time in grade as Rokudan
- Non-competitor 15 years
- Competitor, 5 points 10 years
- Competitor, 10 points 8 years
- Competitor, 15 points 6 years
- Batsugun or 20 points 5 years
General requirements
- Unquestioned moral character and maturity.
- Continued practice and involvement in judo.
- Terminology required for lower ranks, with increased proficiency in all lower rank requirements.
- Good understanding of and skill with teaching.
- First Aid, CPR, Safe Sport and CDC Heads Up Certification.
- Major levels of refereeing and judging (shiai and/or kata).

Promotion application
- For Nidan and above they must have current membership plus three years prior membership.
- All applicants for Shodan and above must undergo the USJF background/screening program per USJF documented procedure. (If candidate is a minor this is not needed.)
