O-soto-gari countered by Te-guruma

  1. O-soto-gari大外刈 · おおそとがり
  2. Te-guruma手車

The outer reap arrives chest to chest with the reaping leg in the air, and that leg is what the hand wheel takes: tori drops the hips, catches the raised thigh with one hand and the back with the other, and lifts the whole attack over to land flat. The filmed version runs straight on into the chest hold.

Step by step

These steps describe the whole sequence in the standard right-handed form.

  1. They step beside you and their right leg swings past yours to reap: chests together, their reaping leg in the air.
  2. Bend your knees and drop your hips below theirs before the reap can come back through your leg.
  3. Slide your right hand palm up to catch the inside of the raised thigh, and take their belt or far hip with your left.
  4. Draw them tight to your chest and stand up through your legs, keeping your back straight.
  5. Steer with both hands so their legs rise and their shoulders tip towards the mat in front of you.
  6. Lower them onto their back, controlling the descent all the way down rather than letting them drop.

Receiving it

You are attacking, and the leg you reaped with never comes back to the floor. Being lifted is disorientating because your own turn stops mattering: you are travelling with their body, not your own. Do not twist to escape once your feet are off the mat, since a rotation started in the air is what turns a controlled landing into a bad one. Stay long, keep hold of the sleeve, and slap as your back reaches the mat. Your partner owes you a landing here, not a drop.

VI judo notes

Everything about this counter is felt rather than seen: their chest arriving on yours, their thigh rising against your hip, then your own hands finding the thigh and the belt. Drop your hips the moment the chests meet, because the lift is only available while their reaping leg is still up. Say before you start that you are working a lifting counter, so that the person being lifted knows what is coming.
