Hane-goshi countered by Hane-goshi-gaeshi

  2. Hane-goshi-gaeshi跳腰返 · はねごしがえし

As your partner turns in for the springing hip throw, the leg they spring with is off the mat and the leg they stand on is committed. Reaping the standing leg from the outside as the spring begins is the springing hip counter, the named answer.

Step by step

These steps describe the whole sequence in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Their back turns into your chest and their right leg folds across the front of your thighs: Hane-goshi is on its way.
  2. Sit your hips back and bend your knees so the bent leg has nothing above it to lift.
  3. Wait for that leg to rise. While it is rising it carries none of their weight and their standing left leg carries all of it.
  4. Lift them and reap that standing leg to your left with your right leg, or hook your left leg round the outside of their lower left leg and reap it to your right.
  5. They land on their back in front of you. Keep the sleeve and lift it as they land.

Receiving it

You are the one attacking here. Your spring meets a partner who has already dropped below it, so the bent leg lifts into space and your hip never arrives under theirs. With that leg in the air, the leg you stand on is reaped from the outside and the fall comes quickly, onto your back. Keep your chin on your chest, let your gripped arm stay long rather than reaching back for the mat, and slap hard with the free arm as your back lands. Springing only once their weight is genuinely on you is what keeps this counter off you.

VI judo notes

This is a counter made entirely through contact, so nothing in it needs sight. Their bent leg settling against the front of your thigh tells you the spring is loaded before it moves, and the moment that pressure lightens their whole weight is on the other leg. Trace that standing leg with yours from the outside and reap it as soon as your legs touch.
