De-ashi-harai countered by Ko-uchi-gari

  1. De-ashi-harai出足払
  2. Ko-uchi-gari小内刈

A sweep that misses leaves your partner standing on one leg with their sweeping foot in the air. Reaping the leg they are standing on answers it directly.

Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Feel their foot arrive against your advancing ankle as they attempt De-ashi-barai.
  2. Lift your swept foot clear rather than resisting, and keep your grips.
  3. Put that foot down beyond their sweep and take their weight onto it.
  4. Their sweeping leg is still off the mat, so all their weight is on their supporting leg: push their chest back with your lapel hand.
  5. Reap that supporting foot inwards with the sole of your foot.
  6. They sit down backwards; keep the sleeve and follow them down under control.
