Competition day

One page for the morning of a competition: what to pack, the weigh-in, the judogi check, the shido ladder and the clock, each line ticked off as you go. The rules page carries the reasoning; this carries the order of the day.

Read it the night before and once more at the venue. Every line that restates a rule names the article it rests on. The lines that do not are practice, and your event's own information sheet outranks them where the two differ.

The night before

Weigh-in

The window, whether a second attempt is allowed, what may be worn on the scale and any tolerance are set by the federation and the event rather than by the refereeing rules, so read the event information for them. Nothing in this section restates a rule.

Judogi check

The control officials measure the judogi rather than judge it: sleeve and trouser length, the overlap of the jacket, the belt. The measurements are in the IJF's judogi rules and your federation's own. Check yours against them at home, on the body, with the arms out in front.

The shido ladder

Two shido are warnings. The third is hansoku-make, the contest is lost, and you may stay in the competition where the format allows. A shido never scores for the other athlete. Direct hansoku-make is kept for the dangerous acts and ends the contest at once.
