O-soto-gari into Yoko-wakare

  1. O-soto-gari大外刈
  2. Yoko-wakare横分

A partner who resists the major outer reap by leaning hard into you has committed their weight forward. Yoko-wakare takes the support away sideways and lets that commitment finish the throw.

Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Take your right grips and attack with O-soto-gari.
  2. Feel them drive their chest forward into you to kill the reap.
  3. Keep both grips and turn your body to face the same direction as them.
  4. Drop low and extend your legs across in front of both of theirs, sitting down onto your side.
  5. Pull both hands down and across your own body as you drop, spreading them over your legs.
  6. They fall forward and across onto their side; keep the sleeve so the landing stays controlled.
