The official syllabus

As printed in Rank Requirement Recommendations Handbook, Section VI. Skills that are not a single technique (breakfalls, escapes, turnovers, grips, randori) are listed in the document's own words.

Minimum age and time in grade

  • Minimal Age: 42 years old
  • Minimal Time in Grade: 19 years

General requirements

  • Unquestioned moral character and maturity.
  • Continued practice and involvement in judo.
  • Terminology required for lower ranks
  • With increased proficiency in all lower rank requirements
  • Good understanding of and skill teaching certification
  • Major levels of refereeing and judging (shiai and/or kata)
  • First Aid, CPR, Safe Sport and CDC Heads Up Certification

Additional requirements

  • Demonstrative moral characters and skills such as:
  • Ability to inspire and organize
  • Recognition for a lifetime of Judo
  • Being a life coach
  • Being an extraordinary individual

Promotion application

  • For Nidan and above they must have current membership plus three years prior membership.
  • All applicants for Shodan and above must undergo the USJF background/screening program per USJF documented procedure. (If candidate is a minor this is not needed.)
