The official syllabus

As printed in Rank Requirement Recommendations Handbook, Section VI. Skills that are not a single technique (breakfalls, escapes, turnovers, grips, randori) are listed in the document's own words.

Minimum age and time in grade

  • Minimal Age: 27
  • Minimal Time in Grade: Time in grade as Godan
  • Non-Competitor – 12 years
  • Competitor, 5 pts. – 8 years
  • Competitor, 10 pts. – 6 years
  • Competitor, 15 pts. – 5 years
  • Batsugun or 20 pts. – 4 years

Minimum time in grade by competitor class

  • Class A: 5 years
  • Class B: 7 year
  • Class C: 9 years
  • Class D: Points earned

General requirements

  • Unquestioned moral character and maturity.
  • Continued practice and involvement in judo, Terminology required for lower ranks, with increased proficiency in all lower rank requirements, Good understanding of and skill teaching certification.
  • Major levels of refereeing and judging (shiai and/or kata), First Aid, CPR, Safe Sport and CDC Heads Up Certification.

Nage waza

  • Demonstrate knowledge of previous ranks.

Osaekomi waza

  • All Osae-komi-waza and escapes

Shime waza

  • All Shime-waza, Counters to all

Kansetsu waza

  • All Kansetsu-waza

Kata

Tournament experience and referee

  • None but expect leadership in these areas

Additional requirements

  • Demonstrative moral characters and skills such as:
  • Sharing of an historical and philosophic perspective of Judo
  • Increased expertise in one or more areas
  • Leadership in dojo, Yudanshakai, USJF and the community
  • Recognition by one’s peers
  • Direct participation in on-the-mat activities in uniform

Promotion application

  • For Nidan and above they must have current membership plus three years prior membership.
  • All applicants for Shodan and above must undergo the USJF background/screening program per USJF documented procedure. (If candidate is a minor this is not needed.)
