The official syllabus

As printed in Yodan to Hachidan Promotion; USJA Judo Rank Promotion System, 9th and 10th Dan Promotion Requirements; 9th and 10th Dan Recommendation for Promotion. Skills that are not a single technique (breakfalls, escapes, turnovers, grips, randori) are listed in the document's own words.

Minimum requirements

  • Must be 65 years of age or older.
  • Must have five continuous years closest to the date of submission as a member of USJA as a Hachidan to be eligible for promotion to Kudan.
  • Must be an active/current member of the USJA.
  • Must have been continuously involved in activities with USJA such as teaching, training, coaching, refereeing or administration/leadership.
  • Must be a member of a Chartered USJA club.
  • Must have at least 10 years in grade as a Hachidan.
  • Must have unquestioned moral character, integrity, and maturity. Should have an exceptional and unblemished judo career.
  • Must have a current & clear Background Screen, current Concussion/Heads Up Certification and Safe Sport Certification.
  • Must have all claimed USJA Certifications up to date and current.
  • Must have documented substantial National/International presence/impact/effect on the Judo Community.
  • Must have been an outstanding competitor, coach, referee, teacher and/or Judo leader or produced high level competitor, coaches, referees, teachers and/or Judo leaders.
  • A vote of 75% of the entire Promotional Committee shall be required for approval of Kudan rank.
  • A vote of 75% of the entire Board of Directors shall be required for approval of Kudan rank.
  • Must be recommended for Promotion by (2) 7D + (2) 8D + (1) 9D that are active/current USJA members with comprehensive written recommendations as to why they support this candidate for their promotion to 9D.
  • Must submit an extensive Judo biography to cover activities since their last promotion and your lifetime accomplishments.
  • Must submit an updated Photo (passport/jpg).

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Only those with documented activities at the highest levels are considered for high dan promotions. Sixty percent (60%) or more of the activities must be at the levels shown as follows or higher. Activities that include those for visually impaired VI such as Parapan Games, Para World, and Paralympics also meet this requirement equally.
  • 9th Dan National and International level

  • 9th/10th Dan RFP form complete, make sure you have correct form and it must be typed.
  • Candidate must have current & maintained USJA membership. (Annual or SLM with Chartered USJA Club)
  • Candidate must have current and clear Background check.
  • Candidate must have completed Safe Sport Certification.
  • Candidate must have completed CDC Heads Up Certification.
  • Candidate meets or exceeds TIG.
  • All claimed USJA Certifications up to date and current.
  • Enclose *Processing Fee as required, amount $35.00. After approval, Promotion fee due as listed below.
  • Include an updated Photo (Passport type).
  • Include an extensive Judo Biography.
  • Include comprehensive written recommendation from all high dan blackbells that signed your RFP.
