Kata

Qualified by experience

  • Aged 72 or older, actively involved in judo and active as a 5th Dan, meeting the minimum time in grade and most but not all of the criteria: may still apply, with a CV and the six required kata certificates
  • Aged 80 or over, meeting the majority of the syllabus criteria: one dispensation from a competitive 1st Dan instead of a competitive 3rd Dan, time in grade reduced by one category (2 years), or no kata requirements
  • Aged 90 or over: one further dispensation as well, from a non-competitive 1st Dan instead of a competitive dan grade, time in grade reduced by two categories, or no kata requirements. The form glosses two categories as 2 years, the same figure it gives for one

Compassionate promotion

  • May be considered on a diagnosis of terminal illness, for a judoka active as a 5th Dan for at least six years. The NPGC may recommend it to the BJA Board of Directors; the application and a covering letter with evidence go to the NPGC via the NDGM

How this grade is examined

The syllabus above is what 6th Dan covers. What follows is what a promotion to it actually asks for, section by section, with the marks needed to pass.

Also required for this promotion

Examined on its own terms and need not be taken on the same day.

Flashcards

Drill the names before the day: an Anki deck for each grade turns the Japanese names into quick recall.
