Uchi-mata countered by Tai-otoshi

  1. Uchi-mata内股
  2. Tai-otoshi体落

When your partner commits to Uchi-mata their lifting leg is off the mat and everything rests on one foot. Blocking that foot and turning them is the standard answer.

Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Feel their thigh arrive between your legs as they turn in for Uchi-mata.
  2. Drop your hips and widen your stance so the lift cannot get underneath you.
  3. Keep both grips and turn your chest in the same direction as theirs.
  4. Extend your near leg across the front of their supporting foot, knee braced and leg straight.
  5. Turn your hands like a wheel, pulling the sleeve down and driving the lapel around.
  6. They tip over your extended leg onto their back; keep the sleeve.
