The swallow counter, and the reason De-ashi-barai is taught with a warning. You withdraw the foot they are sweeping and sweep theirs on the same line while it is still travelling.

Step by step

The whole sequence in words. Described in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Feel their sole arrive against the outside of your advancing foot.
  2. Withdraw your foot smoothly over their sweep rather than pulling it back and down.
  3. Keep both grips and stay upright; their sweeping leg is now committed and carrying no weight.
  4. Sweep their sweeping foot on the same line with the sole of your own, in the direction it is already going.
  5. Pull down and across with the sleeve as the foot leaves the mat.
  6. They fall onto their side; keep the sleeve so their head stays supported.
