Uchi-mata into Tai-otoshi

  1. Uchi-mata内股 · うちまた
  2. Tai-otoshi体落 · たいおとし

A partner who pulls off the sweeping leg by planting the other foot stays leaning forward. Dropping the sweeping leg across their shin turns the throw into the body drop.

Step by step

These steps describe the whole sequence in the standard right-handed form.

  1. Sweep up between their legs with Uchi-mata, sleeve past your left hip and their chest drawn onto your back.
  2. Feel them plant the far foot and pull back off the sweeping leg, staying leaning forward as they do it.
  3. Put the sweeping leg down across the front of their right shin, foot outside the ankle, knee bent.
  4. Break the back contact and turn side-on: the leg is a bar and carries none of their weight.
  5. Pull the sleeve hard past your left hip and drive the lapel across their chest, rotating your trunk to the left.
  6. They turn over the bar and land in front of you and to your left; guide the sleeve down through the landing.

Receiving it

Pulling back off the sweeping leg saves you from the inner thigh throw and leaves you leaning forward, which is the position the body drop wants. The leg reappears low across your shin and the throw comes from their arms and trunk instead. You travel forwards, so slap early and keep your head off the mat. Recovering your posture, rather than only your leg, is what makes the second attack fail too.

VI judo notes

Both throws are the same turn, so this is one movement to learn rather than two: the sweeping leg comes down and becomes the bar. You will feel their weight lift off your back as they pull away, and that is the cue to lower the leg. Because the bar takes no weight, keep the hands doing the work and let the shin contact tell you the leg is placed.
