Turnover into Tate-shiho-gatame from beneath ============================================ Turnovers (turning a defending partner) The one turnover that starts from underneath. Your partner is on top and defending, and instead of escaping sideways you take them over and arrive astride: an escape and an attack in the same movement. Key points ---------- - Clamp an arm and the leg on the same side before bridging - Bridge and turn in one action, not two - Ride up into the hold as they land; do not stop halfway Step by step ------------ 1. You are on your back with your partner on top of you, between or across your legs. 2. Bring both elbows in tight to your ribs and clamp one of their arms against your chest with both hands. 3. Hook your foot around the outside of their leg on the SAME side as the trapped arm, so their base there is gone. 4. Plant your other foot flat and close to your hip, then bridge hard up and over the clamped side. 5. Turn with the bridge and follow them all the way over, keeping the arm and leg clamped. 6. As they land on their back, ride your hips up astride their waist, bring your knees tight to their sides and settle into Tate-shiho-gatame. From the other side ------------------- If your arm and the leg on that side are both trapped, post your free hand wide and get your weight off their chest immediately, before the bridge arrives. Once the roll starts, going with it and coming up on your knees costs less than being pinned. VI judo notes ------------- Same side is the rule, and both clamps can be checked by touch before you commit: their arm on your chest, your foot hooked outside their leg on that same side. Bridge only when both are definitely there.
