Uchi-mata into O-uchi-gari. Combination (Renraku-waza). Techniques ---------- 1. Uchi-mata (内股), the inner thigh throw. 2. O-uchi-gari (大内刈), the major inner reap. About ----- A partner who drops the hips and bends forward to stop the inner thigh throw has the rear leg planted beneath them. Bringing the sweeping leg down and reaping that leg from the inside takes them backwards. Opens when uke bends forward; a change of direction. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Turn in for Uchi-mata and start the sweep up between their legs. 2. Feel them drop their hips and bend forward over you, planting the rear left leg beneath them. 3. Bring the sweeping leg back down to the mat rather than fighting for the lift. 4. Step your right foot between their feet as it lands. 5. Curl your calf inside that planted left leg and reap it out in a circle towards their left rear corner. 6. Drive both hands down and back as the leg goes; they fall backwards and you keep the sleeve. Receiving it ------------ Bending forward and lowering your hips is the standard defence and it works against the sweep, but it plants your rear leg and leaves your weight on it. The attack then arrives at that leg from the inside while you are still folded over them. The fall is backwards from a bent position, so straighten as you go, keep your chin on your chest, and slap with the free arm. Defending with your hips while keeping your feet mobile is what stops the pair. VI judo notes ------------- Their defence is felt as weight coming down onto your back and hips, which is a clear signal without sight. Put the sweeping leg down as soon as you feel it rather than searching for the lift, since the reap needs your own base back. From there it is calf against calf at the knee, and the hands finish it.
