Tomoe-nage into O-soto-gari. Combination (Renraku-waza). Techniques ---------- 1. Tomoe-nage (巴投), the circle throw. 2. O-soto-gari (大外刈), the major outer reap. About ----- A stalled circle throw stands both of you back up with your partner leaning away from it; regaining your feet and reaping the braced leg finishes what the sacrifice began. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Take your right grips, sit down under them and place the sole of your left foot on their lower stomach for Tomoe-nage. 2. Feel the throw stall: they drop their hips, lean away and refuse to travel over the top of you. 3. Do not stay on your back. Keep both grips, pull yourself back up towards them and get your feet underneath you. 4. They are still leaning away, so their weight is on their heels: step your left foot in beside their right foot. 5. Pull down with the sleeve, drive your right hand up into their chin line and swing your right leg past theirs, reaping the back of their right leg. 6. They fall straight back; keep the sleeve and stay upright over them. Receiving it ------------ Refusing to go over a circle throw means leaning away from it, and leaning away is exactly the weight distribution the outer reap wants. Expect them to come back up onto their feet rather than giving up, and expect the reap to arrive while you are still braced backwards. Keep your chin on your chest, do not reach behind you, and slap the mat with your free arm as your back lands. Demonstrations -------------- Mike Swain: 1:18:33 Tomoe-nage to Ososto-gari https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cCAytbmk3g&t=4713s VI judo notes ------------- A stalled sacrifice is a moment when you are on the mat and they are standing, so keep both grips throughout: they are the only thing telling you where your partner is while you get your feet back. Come up towards them rather than away, so contact is restored before you attack. Their braced-back weight is felt in your lapel hand as you rise, and that is the signal to reap rather than to try again.
