O-soto-gari into Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi. Combination (Renraku-waza). Techniques ---------- 1. O-soto-gari (大外刈), the major outer reap. 2. Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi (支釣込足), the propping drawing ankle throw. About ----- Defending the outer reap, your partner drags the attacked leg back and drives forward; the propping foot catches that drive at the ankle and wheels them over it. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Take your right grips and reap at the back of their right leg with O-soto-gari. 2. Feel them drag that leg back out of the reap and drive their weight forward into you. 3. Put your right foot down and step back with their drive, keeping the sleeve tight so they keep coming. 4. Place the sole of your left foot against the front of their right ankle, your leg straight, and prop it there. 5. Turn your hands like a steering wheel, lifting their sleeve up and around while your right hand draws their shoulders over the prop. 6. They wheel forward over the propped ankle and land on their back; keep the sleeve so their head is supported. Receiving it ------------ You save the leg from the reap by dragging it back and driving forward, and that drive is what the prop needs: their foot arrives at the front of your ankle and stops it while their hands turn your shoulders over the top. It is a wheeling fall, not a backward one. Go with the turn instead of fighting to stay over your feet, chin tucked, and slap with your free left arm as your back lands. Demonstrations -------------- Mike Swain: 1:15:30 Osoto-gari to Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cCAytbmk3g&t=4530s VI judo notes ------------- Their forward drive is felt in both hands, and it is the cue to stop reaping and start propping. Slide your foot down their shin to the ankle rather than reaching for it, so the prop lands in the right place first time. The throw is made by the hands turning while the foot only stops the leg, which is worth drilling as two separate jobs.
