Hiza-guruma into De-ashi-harai. Combination (Renraku-waza). Techniques ---------- 1. Hiza-guruma (膝車), the knee wheel. 2. De-ashi-harai (出足払), the advancing foot sweep. About ----- Escaping the wheel means stepping around it, and a stepping foot is exactly what De-ashi-harai wants: sweep it as it travels. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Take the standard right grips and place the sole of your left foot against the outside of their right knee, turning your hands to send them forward. 2. Feel them step around the block rather than going over it, their right foot travelling out and across the mat. 3. Put your left foot straight back down and stay with their movement, keeping the sleeve tight. 4. As that foot travels, and just before it takes their weight, sweep it sideways with the sole of your left foot along the line it is already going. 5. Pull their right sleeve down and across your body as the foot leaves the mat so their shoulders follow their feet. 6. They land on their side; keep the sleeve so their head is supported. Receiving it ------------ The knee block turns you forward over it, and stepping around it is a sound escape, but the escaping foot has to travel, and a travelling foot is what De-ashi-barai sweeps. Expect the sweep on the same foot they have just blocked, along the line you were already stepping. You land on your side rather than flat on your back: chin tucked, slap with your free arm the instant your side arrives, and let the held sleeve carry some of the weight. Demonstrations -------------- Mike Swain: 1:27:18 Hiza-garuma to De-ashi-barai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cCAytbmk3g&t=5238s VI judo notes ------------- The same foot makes both attacks, so keep it low and near the mat rather than lifting it away after the block. Their escape step is felt as the block going slack and their weight sliding sideways in your hands: sweep with that movement, never against it. Sweeping a moving foot is a timing skill rather than a visual one, which is why ashi-waza rewards judoka who work from contact.
