Kuzure-kesa-gatame to Ude-garami. Groundwork chain (Ne-waza chains). Techniques ---------- 1. Kuzure-kesa-gatame (崩袈裟固), the modified scarf hold. 2. Ude-garami (腕緘), the entangled armlock. About ----- The broken scarf hold leaves your partner's far arm free, and the usual thing they do with it is push. Ude-garami folds that arm back on itself. Age limits apply to joint locks; learn this only under instruction. Step by step (standard right-handed form) ----------------------------------------- 1. Hold them in Kuzure-kesa-gatame at their right side. 2. Feel them bring their left arm across to push at your head or shoulder. 3. Trap that wrist against the mat with your left hand, keeping their elbow bent at a right angle. 4. Thread your right hand under their upper arm and grip your own left wrist, forming the figure four. 5. Keep their elbow at a right angle and rotate their forearm slowly towards their feet, lifting the elbow a little. 6. Apply the pressure slowly and stop the moment they tap. Never apply it quickly. Receiving it ------------ Pushing at their head or shoulder with your free arm is the natural thing to try from underneath, and it is the arm that gets taken. You will feel your wrist pinned to the mat, your elbow held at a right angle and your forearm rotated slowly towards your feet. There is no escape once the figure four is closed, so tap early and clearly, on their body if you can reach it. Keep that arm bent and close to you if you want to keep it. Demonstrations -------------- Akita Judo: Kuzure-kesa-gatame to Ude-garami https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ux5wWA3WZg VI judo notes ------------- The whole exchange is contact, so it reads the same for every judoka: their arm coming across is felt on your head or shoulder before it could be seen. Keep your chest weight on them while your hands build the figure four, or the hold slips while you are busy. Agree the tapping signal before you start, apply the rotation slowly, and stop the instant it comes. Age limits apply to joint locks; learn this only under instruction.
